A new £10million extension at Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus was opened to students today (Wednesday 8th December) at a ceremony attended by the Minister for Employment and Learning, Danny Kennedy MLA.
The state of the art project houses a new Transport Skills Centre, refurbished construction and engineering facilities and a new canteen with social area for students.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Employment and Learning, said, “It gives me great pleasure to officially open this facility today, one which provides excellent educational accommodation for the people of Newtownabbey and the surrounding area.
The building has created a learning environment where students can reach their full potential and progress into their chosen careers.”
Director of NRC Trevor Neilands welcomed the Minister, students and special guests to the facility saying:
“I’m delighted to see this new building open today following a year- long construction project. The finished extension offers NRC students an outstanding learning environment and we are looking forward to seeing them reach their potential as they utilize the new facilities available.”
Mr Neilands continues: “A key part of the extension is the new Transport Skills Centre with state of the art training facilities including a fully equipped workshop and online learning package. This centre of excellence will deliver the highest level of training to our engineering apprentices.”
The new extension has been designed to the highest environmental standards, with the installation of an energy efficient biomass heating system, fuelled by locally sourced and sustainable wood pellets.

With over 5,000 students attending the Newtownabbey Campus they will also benefit from.
A range of new courses will be delivered in the New Building including courses belonging to the Faculty of Built Environment & Art Design and the Faculty of Engineering.
The extension was delivered by contractors H&J Martin Ltd with support from KFA Architects, Williams & Shaw and Taylor & Boyd.
