David McCluskey is a Heavy Vehicle Repair (HVR) Apprentice employed by Cahill Motor engineering, a local Newtownabbey employer, now studying NVQ Level 3 HVR. Last year when David was working towards NVQ Level 2 he was entered for the following competitions:
WorldSkills UK and irtec
In both of these competitions David was selected as a finalist. The WorldSkills UK final was held in Bristol and David represented the Northern Regional College.
In the irtec competiton David came 3rd overall.
Both of the above involved David demonstrating his practical skills gained at both NRC Motor Vehicle department and with his employer, and he had to do an on-line exam for both to show competence in the theory side of HVR.
David has stated that being selected as a finalist in both these competitions has been great experience for him especially as it was a high pressured environment where his skills were monitored closely. He feels it has had a positive impact upon his job as he now feels more confident in his role after being a finalist and winner.
