Northern Regional College staff within the Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing Engineering have developed and delivered a unique and innovative course for local company Schlumberger, in both their Monkstown and Houston, USA plants. NRC lecturers Gordon Kane and Wilson Field have worked with this local company to create a manufacturing processes course for Schlumberger Completions.

Lecturers spend a minimum of six weeks, and up to twelve weeks, on placement with a suitable company, developing and completing a mutually beneficial project. Due to the diversity of the skills and knowledge required, the placement was shared between two lecturers. Engineering lecturers’ Wilson Field and Gordon Kane worked on the project alongside company representatives to develop the Schlumberger specific training course. An initial three day training programme was delivered to an audience of 20 company delegates in June 2007, including company representatives from England, France and the USA.

Following the positive feedback, additional materials were developed and a new 5 day programme was delivered. Due the success of this, Schlumberger requested for the same course to be delivered in their Ardmore plant in Houston USA, for a more detailed assessment and analysis. NRC lecturers, travelled to Houston to deliver the 5 day programme to 20 Schlumberger delegates.
