The College is committed to ensuring that all trainees benefit from the opportunity to undertake work placement through the Level 1 and Level 2 Skills for Work. Industry links are also through the work placements and college, employer engagement.

APPRENTICESHIPSNI LEVEL 2 & LEVEL 3
ApprenticeshipsNI Level 2 & Level 3 combines the practical hands-on experience of the workplace with the knowledge and understanding and practical skills gained in the college classroom and work.

How do I join?
You must be in paid employment at least 21 hours per week including college day release. You must be aged 16-24. Apply online and attend an interview. Take part in an aptitude test (if applicable).

There is NO COST to the apprentice or the employer for ApprenticeshipsNI training. The only cost to the employer is the apprentice’s salary. An Employer Financial Incentive is available on achievement by the Apprentice of full Level 2 and/or Level 3 Framework. This incentive ranges from £250 to £1,500 depending on the complexity and level of apprenticeship undertaken.


Course Content

To prepare candidates for working with 0 - 19 age range. This  qualification provides you with the preparation needed for working with children in a variety of settings, including nursery assistant, pre-school assistant, crèche assistant or parent-toddler assistant

Assessment Methods

Level 1 & 2 Skills for Work
Continuous assessment throughout the course of practical workshop and theory tasks. This will be presented as a portfolio of evidence. Practical aspects of the course are examined by an overall practical end test. Theory is tested at the end of each unit by an online, multiple choice exam. There will also be an externally set multiple choice exam.

Apprenticeships NI Level 2
Continuous assessment throughout the course of practical workshop and theory tasks. Evidence of competency can be obtained through observations in the workplace, physical y products of work, reports, plans, photographs, online assessments, witness testimony, discussion and questioning.

Level 1 Skills for Work

  • You must have attained the minimum school leaving age of 16 (up to 22 years for those who require additional support and 24 years for those in care)  be unemployed and meet the GCSE entry criteria for Skills for Work Level 1.

Level 2 Skills for Work

  • You must have attained the minimum school leaving age of 16 (up to 22 years for those who require additional support and 24 years for those in care)  be unemployed and meet the GCSE entrance criteria for Skills for Work Level 2.

ApprenticeshipsNI Level 2/Level 3

  • To be eligible to enter ApprenticeshipsNI programmes Level 2/Level 3 Apprenticeship provision, an unemployed person must: have attained the minimum school leaving age of 16; have or be about to take up permanent paid employment with a Northern Ireland-based company and be contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week (including day release/ off- the-job training) with one employer; have the potential to successfully complete all the requirements of the appropriate Level 2/Level 3 Apprenticeship Framework; meet any health requirements (e.g. colour vision) specific to the occupation of their choice; have achieved any necessary entry academic qualifications (e.g. GCSE) determined by the relevant sector for the apprenticeship and approved by the Dept. for the Economy; and pass any entry tests specified by the relevant sector/employer and approved by the Dept. for the Economy.
  • In addition if you are with an existing employer you must: Be in permanent remunerative employment with a Northern Ireland-based company from day one of the apprenticeship; be contracted to work a minimum of 21 hours per week (including day release/off-the-job training) with one employer; and meet all the other eligibility criteria as set out above.

Achievement of the Level 2 Diploma could lead to employment within the Early Years Industry with the possible opportunity to achieve an ApprenticeshipsNI Level 2. NB: Progression to ApprenticeshipsNI requires paid employment and will depend upon grades achieved and satisfactory progress reviews.

All full-time students at the Northern Regional College have the opportunity to improve their English, Maths and IT skills and gain qualifications. The qualification you take will depend on the qualification you already have. If you do not have a grade C or above in GCSE English, Maths or ICT, you MUST do Essential Skills. This will form a compulsory part of your timetable.
