At level 2 you will develop the foundation skills in hairdressing including health and safety, consultation, shampooing and conditioning, promoting products and services, cutting women’s hair, colouring and lightening hair, cut men’s hair, style men’s hair, the art of dressing hair, creating an image based on a theme and salon reception duties.
Students will benefit greatly from the college’s industrial facility including a commercial salon which is open to the public. You will also undertake 1 day a week in a salon to gain hands on experience in the real working environment. Students are also given the opportunity to participate in the Northern Ireland Hairdressing Association competition held annually which is a fun filled exciting day offering students the opportunity to display their talent. Winners of this competition greatly enhance their CV and employability.
Additional training from colour companies may be given. Industrial trips may be included both to enhance and compliment the mandatory units and to facilitate industrial requirements.
This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge necessary to become a competent hairdresser. You will need to be energetic and enthusiastic to complete this course.

The summative assessments for the qualifications require the candidates to undertake:
- Practical tasks, and
- Mix of knowledge based assignments and online tests
Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs at Grade D-E or above, or other relevant qualifications. In cases where there are more applications for this course than there are places available, candidates with the requisite entry requirements, will be given preference according to the date of receipt by the college of their application.
If you are accepted onto this course wtihout a Grade C or above in Maths and/or English you will be required to complete the relevant Essential Skills qualification. This will be a compulsory part of your timetable.
