NRC Engineering Students Go Stateside!

Two engineering students have just returned from a trip of a life time to Morehead State University, Kentucky.  Nicholas Penny and Derek Tweed, both Higher Education Engineering students at NRC, spent a week meeting students and staff at the University and viewing the facilities of the Industrial Engineering Department.

The visit also gave the students the chance to visit and tour Engineering companies in the area including, Summit Polymers Inc, SRG Global Inc and KDMK (Kyosan Denso Manufacturing Kentucky).  The trip extended the opportunity for the College to raise the profile of the Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing Engineering at NRC.  The students were accompanied by Engineering lecturers William Watson and Paul Casson.

Director/Chief Executive of NRC, Mr. Trevor Neilands said, “This is a great opportunity for our Engineering students and staff and we are indebted to the Council for their on-going support.  The platform to share expertise on an international level is invaluable particularly in the areas of CNC, Robotics and Inspection Quality Control including CMM.

We look forward to further developing the link between NRC and Morehead State University for both students and staff. Ballymena Borough Council has been linked with the City of Morehead under The Sister Cities International Initiative for approximately eleven years, and over this period of time there have been exchanges of business/council representatives.”

The visit was made possible through funding available from Ballymena Borough Council to develop the international contacts of the College for the benefit of students and the local company and to pursue the Council’s strategy of developing Ballymena’s external relationships to maximize the social, economic and cultural benefit to the Ballymena area.

Cultural Calendar

This is the second visit which the Council has funded for the College.  Mrs Anne Donaghy, Chief Executive of Ballymena Borough Council said, “The Council is committed to developing opportunities for young people to improve skills, add to their knowledge and explore their potential in contributing positively to the future of the Borough”.

NRC would like to thank Ballymena Borough Council, the Cultural Services Committee and the External Affairs Sub-Committee for all their help and support and look forward to a Morehead State University delegation visiting Ballymena later in the year.

The staff and students of NRC would also like to thank Dr. Ahmed Zagari, Professor and Chair – Department of Industrial and Engineering Technology at Morehead State University and Jason Stepp (Industrial Facilities Manager) who facilitated this innovative visit.
