Northern Regional College (NRC) student, Ruth Boyd has won a competition devised to support the college’s development of a curriculum which meets industry needs. Students from NRC’s Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art & Design were invited to take part in a Rodney Millar Associates-sponsored competition to design NRC’s 2010 calendar, with the winning artwork to be placed on the front cover. Senior Lecturer of Art and Design at NRC, Darlene Hagan-Bezgin, says linking course work directly to business provides professional insight for students as well as dialogue with business leaders. “Schemes like this expose students to the world of business, in this case the graphic design sector, and as we develop a curriculum which meets the needs of industry it also provides a platform for business leaders to help shape the college’s courses,” she says. NRC is closely linked to business providing expertise to manufacturers such as Ryobi, Michelin, Schlumberger and Toyota through training programmes and process engineering consultancy. This means NRC lecturers are part of the industrial sector and NRC students are better placed to make build relationships with future employers.

1,000 copies of the calendar will be produced and many of these sent to organisations linked to NRC across the world, as an alternative to a Corporate Christmas Card, demonstrating the talents of art and design students at NRC. A selection of the student images used in the calendar will also be printed as limited edition prints for future use by the college.
