Northern Regional College (NRC) has launched an informative guide for its 1,000 staff on equality and diversity to mark Anti-Racist Workplace Week from October 19 to October 23.
The booklet has been prepared by NRC equality officer Fiona McDowell with colleague Claire Moore.
Fiona McDowell says the booklet is necessary particularly for a large supercollege like NRC which has nine campuses, close links with major foreign companies and 30,000 students.
"Northern Regional College provides a learning, training and research environment for thousands of students and business people of all ages, creeds and races and we are committed to the provision of equality of opportunity and respect for diversity.
Our guide offers a ten point check-list for staff to promote equality of opportunity and includes an equality jargon buster to bring clarity to this crucial area.
The guide also includes a concise definition of equality and diversity and a short summary of the key legislation. It will be used in equality awareness training over the coming months," says Ms McDowell.
Welcoming the publication of the Guide, Donal Collins Equality Commissioner says: "The Equality Commission is committed to working in partnership with employers and service providers to promote equality of opportunity and to ensure that key services such as education are available and accessible to all.
This guide for the Northern Regional College staff will be of great value, both in outlining the various equality issues which may arise and by indicating what steps they should take and where they can get further information and advice."
