County Antrim’s further and higher education centre, Northern Regional College, is to provide high-grade business and organisational leadership and management training and education in a new venture known as Acumen.
Acumen will be based at NRC’s state of the art Newtownabbey campus but will also be accessible in the college’s Ballymena, Coleraine and Magherafelt sites. On-site Acumen training for employers will also be available.
The Acumen suite of courses includes Level 3, 5 and 7 Diplomas in Leadership and Management, Primary Care and Health Management and Strategic Leadership. A Foundation Degree in Retailing is also offered.
Acumen short courses include Performance Management, Leadership Skills, Presentation Skills, Time Management, Creative Thinking and Problem Solving, Social Media marketing, Business Improvement techniques, Successful Negotiation and Team Leading. A wide range of further courses is available.
The college’s well established and continually developing relationships with some of the world’s top businesses includes the provision of engineering, production and management expertise by NRC staff as well as student placements.
NRC director Trevor Neilands says the close link to business helps inform the content of the college’s courses to ensure maximum employability of its graduates.

“NRC provides intellectual input into business ranging from successful NI operations such as Hendersons, Tesco and Wrightbus to small specialist firms,” says Mr Neilands. ‘We have recognised for some time now that the expertise of our staff and the experience through years of close collaboration with business and public sector has given us a strong platform on which to launch a formal leadership and management skills centre which we have named NRC Acumen.”
“Businesses and organisations are under intense pressure to deliver results with decreased resources,” says Mr Neilands. “Whether this is Belfast City Council creating 200 new jobs without adding any further burden to rate payers, a manufacturer securing new contracts or a service provider expanding its portfolio, the leadership and management skills necessary to make these things happen are becoming increasingly specialised. NRC Acumen will provide training and education in this field to help prepare people for the new challenges.”
Acumen is managed and underwritten by NRC and is endorsed by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), The Institue for Leadership and Management (ILM) and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
