International Football Duty for Foundation Degree Students

Two Northern Regional College students are successfully juggling their studies with international football duty. Chloe McCarron (19) from Coleraine and Stewart Nixon (20) from Ballymena are second year Foundation Degree students at the College’s Coleraine campus. They are both studying Sport Exercise and Fitness which they hope will be their stepping stone to getting onto a degree programme at Ulster University.

Centre midfielder Chloe who plays for Linfield Ladies, got her first international call up to the Northern Ireland squad when she was just 13 years old. Since then, she has played for the Under 15, Under 17, Under 19 teams and is currently a member of the senior ladies squad. Chloe will be on international duty later this month when the Northern Ireland ladies travel to Slovakia for a preliminary round game in the UEFA Women's Champions League 2017/18.
Stewart, who plays his club football with Ballyclare Comrades, is a member Northern Ireland Junior International team that was crowned Umbro Quadrangular International Cup champions in Scotland last month. The Northern Ireland team had to beat off strong competition from Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and the Isle of Man to lift the cup for the first time in over twenty years of this biannual prestigious tournament.
Damian McCarry, Foundation Degree Sport Exercise & Fitness course director said that Cloe and Stewart have been able to make great practical use of what they are learning on the Foundation degree and, as a result, their football has really benefited.
“By taking the knowledge, skills and techniques they are learning in subjects such as nutrition, psychology, biomechanics and physiology, they have been able to maximise their potential as players. This is very evident in their selection for their respective international teams,” he said.
“By learning how to use equipment that is commonplace in elite international sport, and more importantly, how to understand and interpret the data this equipment produces, has given Chloe and Stewart to a competitive advantage over other players when it comes to squad selections for International competitions.”
