Northern Regional College apprentice Jamie Matthews is currently in Shanghai representing Team UK and the College at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 , known as the ‘Skills Olympics’.

The 20-year-old, who is training with Mivan and studying a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery at Northern Regional College, will compete in Joinery against some of the world’s most talented young professionals.

The competition brings together competitors from more than 80 countries across a wide range of disciplines. Jamie will face a demanding test of his skill, precision, concentration and endurance before the event concludes with the closing ceremony on Sunday.

Jamie’s journey to Shanghai follows several years of training and success in WorldSkills UK competitions. He previously represented the UK at EuroSkills Herning 2025 and has since completed an intensive programme of preparation with the support of WorldSkills UK, Northern Regional College and Mivan.

Mel Higgins, Principal and Chief Executive of Northern Regional College and Trustee of WorldSkills UK, said:

“We are incredibly proud of Jamie and everything he has achieved. Representing the UK on the global stage is a tremendous honour and reflects his talent, dedication and the exceptionally high standard he has demonstrated throughout his training.

“Jamie will be an outstanding ambassador for Northern Regional College, Northern Ireland and skills excellence and everyone at the College will be supporting him throughout the competition.”

Best of luck, Jamie, we are all behind you!
