Award Winning Engineering Student

Tuesday

Northern Regional College Engineering student Rafal Filah swept the boards at the College’s awards ceremony in Ballymena. Originally from Poland, Rafal (21) has been living in Northern Ireland for the past 12 years. He attended the College’s Farm Lodge campus and achieved the highest grade possible in his BTEC Level 3 Engineering Diploma finishing with a D*D*D* grade profile.

Rafal was awarded the Concorde Cup for the Highest Achieving Level 3 Engineering student over the past two years and was also named FE Student of the Year. He plans to continue his studies at Ulster University where he will do a BEng degree in Mechatronics Engineering.

Congratulating Rafal on his success, Karla Kosch, course co-ordinator of the Level 3 Engineering programme, said the former Ballymena Academy student had shown outstanding commitment from his first day on the course.

“Rafal worked very conscientiously throughout his entire two years here. He participated in the Career Ready Programme and got excellent feedback from his placement provider, Randox in Crumlin, where he made a valuable contribution to the company during his two month placement.”

Karla continued: “Rafal also took part in the Robotics and Automation Careers in Engineering for 21st Century (RACE21) project, a two year European project aimed at designing and implementing a robotic or automation solution in a local company. He was also awarded “Best Innovative Project” design in Electrical/Electronics for his satellite module to research the surface of the planets.

“Throughout his time at College, Rafal displayed an excellent range of technical skills and creativity. He is a well-mannered, polite and conscientious person and displayed exceptional interpersonal skills while working in the group and keeping his colleagues focused on the tasks at hand throughout the travel in Europe.”

The Concorde Cup award presented each year by Oliver Reid, former Head of the School of Engineering, to the best performing Level 3 Engineering student.
