Course Content

As a Trainee in Beauty & Nails you may work in a salon, a client’s premises, or in your own salon. Your day-to-day tasks may include:

  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Fulfil salon reception duties
  • Develop and Maintain effectiveness at work
  • Promote additional services or products to clients 
  • Provide facial skin care treatment
  • Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Carry out waxing services
  • Provide manicure services
  • Provide pedicure treatments
  • Provide make-up services

You must:

  • Have a minimum of a Level 1 qualification defined as 4 GCSEs at grades D-G including Maths and English grades D-F or equivalent. However, most areas will require higher grades in Maths and English.  See our Traineeship page for specific grades for each vocational area.
  • Attend an information session.  

On completion of the Traineeship, you can progress to a Level 3 further education course or a Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship (possibly with your work placement employer).  Over 90% of students who complete this course progress into Level 3 Beauty Therapy Massage route/Level 3 Nail Technology and specialist areas. This can lead you to Higher Education options.

Essential Skills

All full-time students at Northern Regional College have the opportunity to improve their English, Maths and ICT skills and gain qualifications. The qualification you take will depend on the qualification you already have. If you do not have a grade C or above in GCSE English, Maths or ICT, you MUST complete Essential Skills; this will form a compulsory part of your timetable. If you are planning to go on to further study (for example university), please check if a GCSE qualification (rather than Essential Skills Level 2 equivalent) is required. For those who have a GCSE grade D in Maths or English, we offer a GCSE fast-track course.
