Hydrogen will play a central role in the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy. This one-day accredited course gives learners a clear introduction to hydrogen safety, focusing on how hydrogen is produced, stored and used, and the controls required to work safely around hydrogen in industrial and commercial environments.

The qualification has been developed by SIAS in line with the Hydrogen Skills Framework to ensure it meets current industry expectations and safety standards. It is suitable for those entering the hydrogen sector for the first time or for workers in related industries who need an introduction to hydrogen safety principles.

Course Content

The course covers three mandatory units and is assessed through a 35-question multiple-choice test. The learning outcomes include:

1. Introduction to the Hydrogen Industry and Legislation

  • The global and UK drivers for hydrogen adoption
  • The role of hydrogen in the UK net zero strategy
  • Overview of hydrogen production, storage and transportation
  • Key legislation, regulation and compliance requirements
  • The importance of following documentation, procedures and safety instructions

2. Hydrogen Properties, Process Design and Safety

  • Chemical characteristics and behaviour of hydrogen
  • Production processes and associated waste products
  • Compressed and liquid hydrogen storage principles
  • How hydrogen is converted to other compounds
  • Safety-critical equipment and hazardous area classification
  • Major accident scenarios and prevention principles

3. Hazards, Risk and Controls Associated with Hydrogen

  • Hydrogen-specific hazards and associated risks
  • Pressure requirements for gas systems and vessels
  • Material compatibility and hydrogen embrittlement
  • Environmental and situational influences
  • Control measures, ATEX-rated equipment and emergency procedures

Course Aims

This course is suitable for:

  • Employees who want to understand sustainability and Net Zero
  • Organisations seeking to upskill their workforce in environmental awareness
  • Individuals preparing for further study in sustainability or low-carbon technologies

Special Features

  • 45-minute online induction session via MS Teams prior to the start date to assist with setting up your NRC IT account and accessing the course learning materials
  • One-day face-to-face training delivered by experienced NRC tutors
  • End test via a Multiple-Choice Question paper completed on the same day

Assessment Methods

Learners must complete an end test in college on the computers. It comprises 35 questions across the three units. A minimum of 24 correct answers is required to achieve a pass.

Learners who meet the assessment requirements will receive the SIAS Level 2 Award in the Introduction to Hydrogen Safety.

Course Update

This course is fully funded by the Department for the Economy, under the Skill Up Programme. This course is a part of a suite of free online accredited courses that the College is offering to upskill, retrain and gain a qualification with no costs associated.

There are no formal entry requirements, though learners should have a basic understanding of English and mathematics

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must meet the Skill Up funding eligibility and the course entry requirements
  • You will be required to have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to enable them to successfully complete the qualification.
