Construction Skills on Display at Northern Regional College Newtownabbey

Tuesday

Student laying bricks to construct a wall

Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus played host to the intercampus heats of the SkillBuild NI competition. The competition, which is governed and run by the Construction Industry and Training Board NI (CITBNI), saw 35 trainees and apprentices from across the College battle it out to secure their place in the SkillBuild 2020 NI finals.

SkillBuild covers a range of construction-related disciplines including plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying, joinery and electrical installation and is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for young students and apprentices. The inter-campus competition is the first stage of a journey that could take them to the Worldskills UK Live finals and potentially all the way to the Worldskills finals next year in China.

All the students were presented with certificates and speaking at the presentation, David Russell, Assistant Head of Department for Engineering and Built Environment said:

“SkillBuild gives our students a fantastic experience to enhance their skills and knowledge in their chosen trade. We have some really skilled individuals across all of our campuses, so it’s fantastic that they get this chance to demonstrate their ability and potential and have the opportunity to test their skills against those of their peers.”

Congratulating all the competitors who took part, David Cooper, Director of CITB NI said:

“At CITB NI we are consistently impressed by the skills demonstrated by the apprentices and trainees who take part in Northern Regional College’s intercampus heats of the SkillBuild NI competition. Thanks to the high standards of training and commitment inherent to their teaching and their co-operation with industry, the College continues to be at the forefront of driving talent in the construction industry.”

“Congratulations to all those who took part today, especially to those who excelled in their category and who will have an opportunity to further demonstrate their talent in the SkillBuild NI Finals in at CITBNI Headquarters at Nutt’s Corner in May.
