FORMER NORTHERN REGIONAL COLLEGE CURRICULUM MANAGER RECOGNISED IN KING’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS

Thursday

Former Curriculum Area Manager for Advanced Technologies at Northern Regional College, Gordon Kane, has been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List for his services to further and higher education in Northern Ireland.

Gordon, who retired from the College in October 2025, has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Having dedicated more than 30 years to Further Education, Gordon has played a key role in transforming engineering and advanced manufacturing training in Northern Ireland. Since joining Lisburn College in 1995 and later Northern Regional College in 2001, he has helped thousands of learners gain the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment and further study.

As Curriculum Manager for Engineering and Skills Champion, Gordon was instrumental in modernising technical training at Northern Regional College. He led the College to become the first Further Education college in Northern Ireland to deliver training using industrial robotics and advanced CNC turning, helping to revolutionise engineering education and ensure students were equipped with the skills needed by industry.

Gordon also designed and led the College Manufacturing Academies, which have supported long-term unemployed people, early school leavers and career changers into the workforce. Focused in Ballymena and surrounding areas, the academies provided hands-on technical training, CV and interview support and direct engagement with employers, helping remove barriers to employment and creating new opportunities for local people.

Through partnerships with employers including Caterpillar, Translink and Langford Lodge, Gordon ensured training remained closely aligned with industry needs, helping learners develop practical skills and supporting the growth of Northern Ireland’s manufacturing sector.

Congratulating Gordon on his recognition, Mel Higgins, Principal & Chief Executive of Northern Regional College, said:

“On behalf of everyone at Northern Regional College, I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to Gordon on this very well-deserved recognition.

“Gordon has made an outstanding contribution to Further and Higher Education in Northern Ireland over many years. His passion for engineering, his commitment to widening access to education and employment, and his determination to create meaningful opportunities for learners have had a lasting impact on our College, our students and the wider community.

“He has always been driven by a genuine desire to help others succeed. Whether through curriculum innovation, employer partnerships, championing skills competitions, skills development or his voluntary work in the community, Gordon has consistently gone above and beyond. We are incredibly proud to see his remarkable service recognised at national level.”

Alongside his work in education, Gordon has also made a significant contribution through voluntary and charitable service. He has volunteered with East Antrim Boat Club, helping to organise local and national sailing events, mentoring people of all ages and abilities and widening access to the sport. He also served for many years as a volunteer with the Coast Guard, supporting coastal safety and emergency response in the local community.

Gordon’s recognition in the King’s Birthday Honours List celebrates a career and voluntary legacy defined by innovation, service, leadership and a lifelong commitment to improving opportunities for others.
