Northern Regional College Apprentices Reach Final Of Prestigious NI Electrical Awards

Friday

Three talented electrical installation apprentices from Northern Regional College have been named finalists in the highly anticipated NI Electrical Awards 2025. Lewis Armour and Emeka Onwuka, both based at the College’s Newtownabbey campus, and Leah Henry, who recently completed her apprenticeship at Ballymena Campus (Farm Lodge), are in the running for Electrical Apprentice of the Year. The winners will be revealed at a gala event in the iconic Titanic Building, Belfast on 6th June.

The NI Electrical Awards celebrate the very best in Northern Ireland’s electrical industry, recognising outstanding individuals, companies, projects and innovations. Reaching the finals is a significant achievement and highlights the exceptional quality of apprentices being developed at Northern Regional College.

Lewis Armour, a second-year apprentice with T&G Electrical, and Emeka Onwuka, a third-year apprentice with AJ MAC Electrical, were both nominated by their lecturer, Iain McCart. Leah Henry, now officially qualified and working for Haughey and Co, was nominated while in her fourth year of study at Ballymena Campus.

Speaking about their nomination, Iain said, “Lewis and Emeka are stand-out students. Their workmanship is consistently excellent, they’re punctual, professional and never cause any issues. They represent exactly what we hope to instil in all our apprentices, and I had no hesitation in putting them forward for this award.”

Leah’s lecturer also praised her dedication and professionalism, noting that her commitment to learning and high standard of practical work made her an ideal candidate for the award. Leah has since completed her apprenticeship and is now working in the industry full-time.

The finalists were selected by a panel of leading figures from the electrical industry, who assessed candidates based on performance, skill level, attitude and potential for future success.

Christine Brown, Curriculum Director of Northern Regional College, added, “We are extremely proud of Lewis, Emeka and Leah. Their achievement reflects not only their personal commitment and talent, but also the strength of our apprenticeship programmes and the dedication of our teaching staff. Reaching the final of such a competitive and prestigious award is a tremendous accolade and we wish them every success at the ceremony in June.”

Northern Regional College continues to build on its reputation for delivery of high-quality vocational education and training, working in partnership with employers across the region to prepare students for successful careers in industry.
