Northern Regional College Celebrates Women Driving Innovation In Cloud Computing And Cyber Security

Wednesday

Northern Regional College is proud to mark International Women’s Day by celebrating four outstanding female students who are forging successful careers in the fast-evolving world of technology through the Level 5 Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) in Cloud Computing and Cyber Security.

Georgia Archibald, Beth Steen, Leah Langley and Zoe Kirkpatrick are all currently undertaking the Level 5 HLA, combining academic study with paid employment in the IT sector. Their journeys reflect the growing presence and impact of women within industries traditionally underrepresented by female professionals.

The Level 5 HLA in Cloud Computing and Cyber Security equips students with specialist knowledge in cloud infrastructure, programming, networking, cyber security principles and industry platforms such as Microsoft Azure. Designed in partnership with industry, the programme enables students to earn while they learn, applying theory directly in real workplace environments.

Georgia Archibald, who previously completed her Level 3 qualification at the College, is now employed in a Help Desk/Service Technician role. She credits the course’s hands-on approach as a key factor in her success.

She said, “The way the course is delivered allows you to apply theory to real-world tasks, which has really strengthened my understanding. Studying cloud fundamentals helped me achieve my Microsoft certification, and I’ve developed strong teamwork and communication skills through our group projects.”

Beth Steen, who works four days a week as a Technical Services Technician, says the apprenticeship model has transformed her career prospects.

Beth said, “Being able to earn while I study has been incredibly beneficial. I’m building experience in the IT industry every day and immediately putting the theory I learn in class into practice. It’s helped improve my confidence and employability enormously.”

Leah Langley, also employed as a Technical Services Technician, has taken her passion for cyber security even further. In addition to her studies, she serves as a volunteer Further Education Representative on the UK Cyber Security Council’s Youth Advisory Panel.

Leah said, “The opportunities at Northern Regional College have allowed me to apply my learning in real-world settings and develop both technical and leadership skills. It has clarified my career direction in cyber security and given me the confidence to pursue it.”

Zoe Kirkpatrick, currently working as a First Line Support Analyst, highlights the value of gaining experience with industry-standard tools.

Zoe said, “Getting hands-on experience with platforms like Microsoft Azure has been incredibly beneficial. It means I feel prepared and confident in my role, and it has definitely supported my progression within the industry”

Mel Launder, Lecturer in Cloud Computing and Cyber Security at Northern Regional College, praised the students’ achievements.

Mel said, “International Women’s Day gives us an important opportunity to recognise the incredible talent and determination of our female students. Georgia, Beth, Leah and Zoe demonstrate exactly what is possible when ambition meets opportunity. They are not only excelling academically, but also contributing meaningfully within the IT industry while they study. They are fantastic role models for other young women considering a career in technology.”

Northern Regional College remains committed to encouraging greater female participation in STEM disciplines and to providing clear, supported pathways into high-demand digital careers. As cloud computing and cyber security continue to play a critical role in the global economy, the College’s Higher Level Apprenticeship programme is empowering women to lead, innovate and shape the future of technology.

This International Women’s Day, Northern Regional College proudly celebrates the achievements of its female apprentices and reaffirms its commitment to inspiring the next generation of women in tech.
