Support and Guidance from College Lecturers Inspires County Derry Student

Wednesday

Girl

The support and guidance she received as a student at Northern Regional College has inspired a young County Derry student to continue her studies with the long-term goal of running her own business. After leaving school, Rachel Rose Mallon from The Loup enrolled at the College’s Magherafelt campus. She completed two of the College’s Inclusive Learning programmes - Aspire to Work and Work Ready - before progressing to Level 2 Technical Business and has just successfully completed the second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business.

She said: “Northern Regional College’s campus in Magherafelt was the most convenient for me but there was also a good range of courses on offer and lecturers were available to provide support and guidance to help me prepare for the world of work. The courses I completed at the College have all helped develop my professional knowledge and transferable skills and this will help my employability.

“Although I liked all the subjects, I loved learning about human resource management theories and how they applied to the workplace. I also enjoyed learning about ‘Starting A Small Business and hope to be able to use this knowledge sometime in the future when I have my own business.”

Rachel-Rose said she would encourage other school leavers to consider all their available options so they could make an informed decision about what to do next.

“I really enjoyed my time at Northern Regional College and think any post-16 students who are unsure about what to do next should definitely consider it.”

Looking to the future, Rachel Rose hopes to return to the College in September for one of the new Leadership and Management courses being offered at Magherafelt campus next year – all part of her long-term goal to have the knowledge and skills needed to run her own business.

Grainne Quigley, course co-ordinator for Level 3 Business at Magherafelt said that Rachel was a highly motivated and ambitious young lady with an admirable work ethic.

“Rachel-Rose worked hard to achieve excellent results. I’m delighted she’s considering doing another course with us and I wish her every success.”

Northern Regional College offers a range of Business courses up to and including degree level. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, prospective students are encouraged to enrol online. Once an application is submitted, applicants will be contacted (by email, text and postcard) and advised how to complete the enrolment process from home.
