The manager of Ballymena United Football Club has encouraged school leavers to consider all available options before deciding their next step. Northern Regional College has ‘teamed up’ with the IFA premier league club to deliver a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development (Ballymena United Academy). The Academy combines a professional training programme with an accredited qualification to give talented young footballers an exciting opportunity to develop, both on and off the football pitch.

County Antrim teenager Steven Gough (16) is studying a carpentry traineeship at Northern Regional College in Ballymoney. As a trainee, he spends three days a week in college, where his time is divided between the classroom and the carpentry workshops as he works towards achieving accredited Level 2 qualifications.

He decided to explore what was on offer at his local FE College and, having discussed his options with staff, opted to study a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling and progressed to a Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling.
