After leaving school in June 2023, Ballymena teenager Taylor Stewart was unsure what to do next. He had no clear career goal but since the idea of working in the construction sector appealed to him, he went along to an Open Day at Northern Regional College to explore his options. Now, almost a year on, Taylor has found his niche. Having signed up for a NI Traineeship in Brickwork at the College in September 2023, he has almost completed the first year of the two-year course. He loves what he is doing and is totally focussed on completing his Level 2 Brickwork traineeship. Taylor is also completing Essential Skills qualifications in Maths and ICT and, when he completes Level 2, hopes to progress to Level 3.

Studying Sports Coaching and Development at Northern Regional College has created many exciting opportunities for a young County Antrim student. After passing his GCSEs, instead of going back to his former school, Ryan McClintock from Cullybackey, opted to study a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development at the College’s campus in Ballymena.

A talented young hairdressing student at Northern Regional College has ambitious plans to manage her own salon. In pursuit of her goal, Katie Smyth from Ballyronan, enrolled at the College’s Magherafelt campus to do a Level 2 traineeship as a stepping stone to progressing to Level 3 and, in the longer term a career as a professional hairdresser.

Hairdressing Students Go Green

Hairdressing students at Northern Regional College who came up with a novel way to recycle hair cuttings were among the winners at the 2024 Northern Ireland Project Based Learning (PBL) finals. With an aim of promoting the development of creative thinking and problem-solving skills among students, the PBL competition was open to all full-time and part-time students at FE Colleges in Northern Ireland.

Engineering students from Northern Regional College were among the talented young robot programmers to participate in the industrial robotics ‘qualifier’ stage of WorldSkills UK at The Smart Factory Expo at the NEC Birmingham. The qualifier stage was their next hurdle in a bid to secure a coveted spot in the WorldSkills UK national skills finals later this year and, potentially, an opportunity to represent the UK at the WorldSkills international finals in China in 2026. Automation is a fast growing and innovative field of engineering with growing career opportunities for industrial robotic specialists. Industrial Robotics involves the use programmable robots to support manufacturing in an automated environment and is part of the curriculum for engineering courses at Northern Regional College.

Eight Northern Regional College students and two staff members have been honoured at the first-ever Further Education NI Excellence Awards. The inaugural awards ceremony was held at the Armagh City Hotel on Tuesday 4th June, with awards categories reflecting the wide spectrum of learning levels and pathways available across Northern Ireland’s Further Education Colleges, from introductory and supported learning to apprenticeships, higher education and lifelong learning.
