Colleges and universities across Northern Ireland are to deliver free training courses in over 250 subjects to help people affected by the pandemic upskill and reskill to boost their career prospects. The £23 million Skill Up investment programme, supported by the Northern Ireland Office, will fund 15,000 free training places for qualifications from entry level right up to post graduation qualifications. Up to 7,000 places will be available in the first year.

A Higher Level (HE) qualification from your local FE College can allow you to move directly into the second year of a university degree. Sophie Briers (23) from North Belfast completed a Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Creative Media (Web and App Development) at Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus. She’s now ready for the next stage of her academic journey as a second-year undergraduate studying Interaction Design at Ulster University.

Northern Regional College has been awarded an Autism Impact Award in recognition of its work supporting students with autistic spectrum disorder and ongoing efforts to provide a fully inclusive learning environment. The award, presented by Autism NI, recognises organisations who excel in creating a more ‘autism friendly environment’. Northern Regional College is currently the only FE college in Northern Ireland to be recognised in this way.

Suzanne Sloane successfully balanced the challenges of a teaching career with part-time study at Northern Regional College and intends coming back for more when the new academic year gets underway in September. Having completed the Ulster University validated Level 4 Counselling Studies at the College’s Ballymena campus, Suzanne plans to transition to the Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling Practice to continue her studies at the College.
