A part time course at Northern Regional College has helped set a County Tyrone mother of two off on a new career trajectory. Loretta Daly from Cookstown, who was awarded a Foundation Degree with distinction in Counselling at the College’s Higher Education graduation ceremony in The Great Hall at Galgorm Resort, has now launched her own counselling service.She explains that doing a Level 4 counselling course on a part-time basis at the College’s Magherafelt campus, whetted her appetite for learning more about the subject:

Natasha Lyttle from Ballymoney who was awarded a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership in Children Care Learning and Development at Northern Regional College’s annual Higher Education graduation ceremony held in The Great Hall at Galgorm Resort, says doing the Diploma helped her secure a new job. When she started the course at the College’s Ballymoney campus, Natasha was working with Dervock Community Playgroup. With new legislation coming into effect, she realised that if she was to progress to the role of deputy leader of the playgroup, she would need a Level 5 qualification.

Thirty students from Northern Regional College’s ‘College Connect’ programme spent a day at Crusaders Football Club as part of their ‘Soccer Brains’ initiative where they had a chance to meet the club’s football heroes and sharpen up their numeracy skills. ‘College Connect’ applies active learning techniques, often outside the classroom, allowing students to engage with their education and acquire new skills and qualifications in a new and fun way.

The Wear it Pink theme was embraced with great enthusiasm with splashes around the College throughout the week. Among the many successful events were cake sales, coffee mornings, afternoon teas, raffles and a sponsored walk.

Oran O’Kane, who is a Building & Grounds Works Supervisor at the Council, was awarded a Foundation Degree in Building Technology and Management at Northern Regional College’s recent Higher Education graduation ceremonies. His decision to go back to books was prompted by the need for a third level qualification which increasingly is a requirement for most management posts in local government.
