The decision to study construction at Northern Regional College has worked out well for young Coleraine man, Jack Neill. Jack completed both a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and Foundation Degree in Construction at Northern Regional College. He is currently employed as a second year Higher Level Construction Apprentice with Heron Bros, the main contractor for the College’s new landmark campus in Coleraine.

Plan B Can Lead to a Successful Career

A Foundation Degree at a FE College can be an excellent alternative to going directly to university after school, according to Molly McEwan, an alumnus of Northern Regional College. Molly, who is now a qualified paediatric nurse working in intensive care in Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, did A levels in Biology, Sociology and English Literature. Originally, she had intended to go directly to university to study nursing but did not secure the necessary grades.

Congratulations to Northern Regional College apprentices Jamie Matthews and Bailey Gibson who have qualified for the national finals of the Skillbuild competitions in joinery and carpentry respectively. Jamie, who is from Ballyclare is employed by Mivan, while Bailey is from Larne and employed by Kudos, a leading timer frame company. They came through the Northern Ireland regional finals with flying colours earlier this year to top their respective categories and finish in the top eight in the UK.

Step-Up, a new programme offering a wide range of flexible new courses is being provided by Northern Ireland’s six further education colleges from September 2023. Consisting of three different strands; College Connect, DARE (Disability Access Route to Education and Employment) and WRAP (Women Returners Access Programme) the programme aims to help anyone over the age of 16, anyone with a disability and those returning to work after a career break to re-engage their skills and education to help them access employment.

As part of its ongoing commitment to grow the economy and develop tourism potential in the Mid and East Antrim Council area, the Council teamed up with Northern Regional College to deliver free tour guiding training. The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna, recently hosted a celebratory event to congratulate the ten local people who are now qualified tour guides, having completed the OCN Level 2 Tour Guiding course.

Staff and students at Northern Regional College enjoyed success at the OCN NI Learning Endeavour Awards. Ashleigh Mulholland from Newtownabbey won FE Learner of the Year and Kyla Skelton was highly commended in the same category, while Inclusive Learner lecturer, Kiera O’Kane was highly commended in the Inspiring Tutor of the Year category.
