Step-Up, a new programme offering a wide range of flexible new courses is being provided by Northern Ireland’s six further education colleges from September 2023. Consisting of three different strands; College Connect, DARE (Disability Access Route to Education and Employment) and WRAP (Women Returners Access Programme) the programme aims to help anyone over the age of 16, anyone with a disability and those returning to work after a career break to re-engage their skills and education to help them access employment.

As part of its ongoing commitment to grow the economy and develop tourism potential in the Mid and East Antrim Council area, the Council teamed up with Northern Regional College to deliver free tour guiding training. The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna, recently hosted a celebratory event to congratulate the ten local people who are now qualified tour guides, having completed the OCN Level 2 Tour Guiding course.

Ashleigh Mulholland from Newtownabbey won FE Learner of the Year and Kyla Skelton was highly commended in the same category, while Inclusive Learner lecturer, Kiera O’Kane was highly commended in the Inspiring Tutor of the Year category.

From a young age, Ross Huston wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a plumber. The young Antrim man has just completed a plumbing apprenticeship at Northern Regional College in Newtownabbey and joined his father Mark and older sister Jessica - who also completed her plumbing apprenticeship at the College - to work as a qualified plumber in the family plumbing business, Huston Heating, which also operates Eden & Ross, a bathroom and tiling showroom in Randalstown.

FANUC, a leading manufacturer of factory automation and robots and competition partner for WorldSkills, made a return visit to Northern Regional College in Ballymena this week to oversee the practical stage of the industrial robotics category in the national skills competition. Northern Regional College has been leading the way in educating the next generation of robotics engineers and has proven record in the national WorldSkills competition, winning gold, silver and bronze medals in 2021 and gold and bronze in 2022.

Returning to education after a break of almost 35 years can be challenging but, for County Antrim man, Paul Rodgers, it has not only been rewarding, but it has opened the door to a second career after retirement. Paul, who lives in Cullybackey, has just completed a three year part-time Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling Practice at Northern Regional College. The qualification is validated by Ulster University and accredited by BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) making him eligible for professional membership and employment as an Integrative Counsellor.
