FANUC, a leading manufacturer of factory automation and robots and competition partner for WorldSkills, made a return visit to Northern Regional College in Ballymena this week to oversee the practical stage of the industrial robotics category in the national skills competition. Northern Regional College has been leading the way in educating the next generation of robotics engineers and has proven record in the national WorldSkills competition, winning gold, silver and bronze medals in 2021 and gold and bronze in 2022.

Returning to education after a break of almost 35 years can be challenging but, for County Antrim man, Paul Rodgers, it has not only been rewarding, but it has opened the door to a second career after retirement. Paul, who lives in Cullybackey, has just completed a three year part-time Foundation Degree in Integrative Counselling Practice at Northern Regional College. The qualification is validated by Ulster University and accredited by BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) making him eligible for professional membership and employment as an Integrative Counsellor.

A young Carrickfergus woman who returned to education to complete an Access to University course at Northern Regional College in Newtownabbey after a break of almost 20 years, is this year’s winner of the Barbara Macaulay Personal Achievement Award. Nichola Barr, who has two young daughters aged 12 and 6 years, hopes to continue with her studies and study midwifery at university.

Welding students from Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus had a clean sweep in SkillWeld, the Northern Ireland regional heats of WorldSkills UK. Up against stiff competition from the College’s other campuses, the Newtownabbey welders filled the top three spots. They now have an anxious wait to see if they did enough to secure a place in the UK national finals in November.

Four Northern Regional College creative media students have qualified for the national finals of the prestigious Adobe Certified Professional (ACP) championship. ACP is a global competition to test skills on Adobe Creative Cloud applications that are used regularly within the creative industry. Thousands of students from across the UK and Ireland competed in the preliminary stages of the competition.

As part of its ongoing commitment to raise awareness about autism and promote social inclusion and autism acceptance, Northern Regional College invited internationally renowned autism advocate, Jude Morrow to deliver interactive training workshops to staff, students and external stakeholders. Jude, who is now in his ‘thirties, was diagnosed as autistic as an eleven year old. He is the founder of Neurodiversity Training International, an important autistic-lead training and consulting firm for global non-profits and Fortune 500 companies.
