Year 10 pupils from nine local schools took part in the annual Ballymena Rotary Club’s technology challenge at the College’s Ballymena Campus. For their challenge this year, the pupils had to design, build and test a weight powered vehicle to travel the furthest distance. A total of 72 pupils from Cambridge House Grammar School, Ballymena Academy, Castle Tower School, St Louis Grammar School, Dunclug College, St Patrick’s College, St Benedict’s College, Slemish College and Cullybackey College competed for the top prize of £200 and runner up prize of £100.

Following a gruelling three-day selection process, four engineering students – three from Northern Ireland representing Northern Regional College and one from Wales - have qualified for the next phase of WorldSkills International Competition Development Programme. All four are still in the running for selection for Team UK to compete in international competitions – EuroSkills in Gdansk, Poland this September and WorldSkills finals in Lyon France in 2024.

Almost forty years after studying construction at Northern Regional College in Ballymena, two alumni are back at their old ‘stomping ground’ and playing a key role in the development of the College’s new campus at Farm Lodge. Colin Michael from Magherafelt and Richard Lennox from Cullybackey went their separate ways after completing an ONC in Construction Studies at the College in Ballymena back in the mid ‘eighties but their paths crossed again last year when they found themselves working on the College’s new campus.

The wealth of opportunities for tour guides in Northern Ireland was showcased at a recent event in The Braid, Ballymena. ‘Celebrating Tour Guiding Enterprise in Action’ was organised by Northern Regional College, supported by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. As part of its drive to boost visitor numbers to the area, the Council teamed up with the College to deliver a free training programme to enable people living in Ballymena, Broughshane, Gracehill, Galgorm, Cullybackey, Kells & Connor, Ahoghill and Portglenone to become qualified Level 2 Tour Guides.

Northern Regional College’s Newtownabbey campus hosted the inter-campus heats of SkillBuild NI 2023 for electrical installation, carpentry, joinery and plumbing. SkillBuild NI is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for young students and apprentices. The annual competition governed by the Construction Industry Training Board NI (CITB NI), covers construction-related disciplines. A total of 37 Northern Regional College students took part in the competitions in a bid to secure their place in the SkillBuild 2023 NI finals in May at North West Regional College.

A total of 37 Northern Regional College students took part in the competitions in a bid to secure their place in the SkillBuild 2023 NI finals in May at North West Regional College.
